A Great Gift

Sometimes something really wonderful happens on a day that’s otherwise pretty “blah.”

Just after the first of the year, I worked with the minister’s at my church to create a project we called “The Barnabas Project.” This was a blog that allows people to write stories about the people in their lives that have inspired them. Dr. Rabb preached a sermon about Barnabas, and about how important it is to help and inspire others.

Since it was my idea, it was important for me to have an article posted there. I wrote an article about my old high school band director, Donald Deal. Wednesday afternoon, I was sitting here at my desk have a not great day when the phone rang. It was Mr. Deal, who I haven’t talked to in probably 20+ years.

As it turns out, Mr. Deal’s brother, who lives in Arizona put Mr. Deal’s name into Google, and this article was one of the results. He sent the link to Mr. Deal, who called my mother and got my number. Then he called me to reminisce and tell me how much the article meant to him.

I couldn’t help but choke up a little. What a nice gift it was. As Rev. Mac said, “Sometimes you don’t know if you are giving or getting.”

Anyway, that was a very exciting way to end a day, and I wanted to share that with you. As a result, I hope you will consider going to the Barnabas site and writing your own article.
