Fred Phelps To Picket Soldier's Funeral

According to a story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Fred Phelps and members of the congregation of his Westboro Baptist Church will picket the funeral of an Idaho National Guard soldier killed in Iraq. The church has been picketing the funerals of other soldiers as well.

According to a flier on the Church’s website, they are picketing to point out that God killed Cpl. Carrie French with an improvised explosive device in retaliation against the United States for a bombing at Phelps’ church six years ago.  "Our attitude toward what’s happening with the war is the Lord is punishing this evil nation for abandoning all moral imperatives that are worth a dime," Phelps said.

Now you see why I push the Methodist Bishops to get out in front on issues. This is the face of "American Christianity" that is being presented to the world. Phelps gets the publicity for this stuff. Of course I realize that Methodist Bishops are busy ferreting out the Lesbian and Gay ministers from the fold, but for the sake of Christianity, can’t the sane leaders of Christianity speak out once in a while?

I can’t get those people to speak out against torture, and I’m pretty sure they won’t speak out against this sort of behavior. And then they form committees to sit around and fret about why people are leaving the church. Duhhh!

Who would want to be associated with Christianity if Fred Phelps is the face of Christianity being presented to the world.
