This entry is part 23 of 33 in the series Deep Thoughts

We need wilderness whether or not we ever set foot in it. We need a refuge even though we may never need to go there….We need the possibility of escape as surely as we need hope. –Edward Abbey

Abbey was sometimes known as the “desert anarchist.” During the middle of the last century, Abbey moved to the desert par of the U.S. and worked as a back country ranger. He advocated a radical environmentalism with sayings like, “Keep America Beautiful-Burn a Billboard.” He wrote a number of books about the beauty of the desert and joy of solitude.

With this quote, Abbey recognizes our need to have the option of escape from the rush of our daily lives.
