This entry is part 3 of 4 in the series Hate Groups

Whiny BabyYou read it right. Radio host Janet Mefferd says that it’s a civil rights violation (the right to freedom of religion) to not even have to “see” gay people. This is how over the top and vitriolic the krazy kristian kooks of the conservative right have become. Last week, a teacher at a school in Indiana decided that if gay and lesbian students were going to get to come to the prom, then there should be a separate prom for the “christian” children (that “c” is intentionally not capitalized). So Mefferd decided she had to weigh in on the topic.

According to her, her religious liberties apparently give her the right to demand that she and her christian friends not even have to see gay people.

You can listen to the segment here from her radio show, but here’s the transcript:

Mefferd: Everything is so upside down in our society now and right and wrong have completely switched where what is really wrong is to say you shouldn’t have two boys allowed to go to the high school prom. Now we can get into a big issue of the public schools are morally bankrupt at this point and we all ought to exit and just let them, let them do their thing, and that may be the ultimate answer; on the other hand, I feel for these Christian kids who are in a prom or kids who are at this high school who say, ‘you know something, do we have to go down this road?’ Whether the homosexual activists like it or not, and I know this isn’t politically correct to say this, but not everybody wants to see that. I know that that’s offensive to the activist crowd, they want us all to see it, they want us all to approve of it, they want us all to call it blessed and okay and rejoice and have parties and throw confetti in the air over this whole thing. But the fact of the matter is it’s a moral issue. You will always have Christians who will disagree with this and why should the rights of the activists trump the rights of Christians?

God’s gentle loving people. Her right to be “christian” apparently trump my rights to life.

I just found your blog – thank you. I’m writing to let you know that after the teacher in Indiana made her discriminatory remarks about “homosexuals having no purpose,” two groups in Indiana – ICON (Interfaith Coalition on Non-Discrimination) and Indianapolis PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays), decided to reach out to LGBT youth and let them know that they DO have a purpose and that we care! Thus, the “You Have A Purpose Project” Facebook page was created. Rev. Marie Siroky of ICON and myself invite people to submit videos telling LGBT youth that they do have a purpose. This page has over 1,500 Likes and quite a few people have submitted videos. However, we are always looking for more video submissions. Here is the link to the site and I hope you will share it with your readers. Thank you!
