Republican Craziness Continues-Biking Bad for the Environment

Finally, the Republican craziness rears its ugly head somewhere besides Florida and Virginia. This time, it is Washington State Representative, Ed Orcutt (Republican), who’s firing the next shot in the Republican war on science. Orcutt recently argued that bicycling is equally bad for the environment as driving cars, because when we bike, we breathe out CO2. Wow! The craziness is strong in this one.

Bicycle Riders in Seattle, WA

And here are some folks adding to global warming

As noted at Americablog, “Republicans generally hate cyclists.  Since heaven forbid anyone exercise, or use roads in a manner that actually decreases the pollution impact.  Cyclists are socialists, you see, and simply must be destroyed.” Orcutt was responding to a question about a tax he wants to impose on bicyclists, and said:

“Also, you claim that it is environmentally friendly to ride a bike. But if I am not mistaken, a cyclist has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.”

Scarier still is that Orcutt is the top Republican on the Transportation Committee.

What’s truly sad, as noted in that same article at Americablog is that, “Orcutt isn’t the fringe of the GOP, he is the GOP.”

Chris at Americablog notes the following examples of the GOP divorce from reality:

It seems to get worse daily. As commenter noted, “Yes, the GOP has a ‘crazy’ problem, but they have an even more serious one. An “embrace of ignorance” problem. They don’t even bother to try to be rational or present facts to support their positions anymore. They just make up shit and assert that it’s true, even when it’s objectively false and patently ridiculous.”

We here in Tampa owe a debt of gratitude to the Sterling District’s representative on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, Eugene Delgaudio, for his excellent description of Tampa’s annual Gasparilla Festival. I’ve sort of blown it off (pardon the pun) over the past few years. It’s crowded, jostling, and drunken mess down on Bayshore. Obviously it’s changed a lot since last we went, so I may have to start going again.

Delgaudio also has a scam he runs to bring in a nice annual salary sending out missives as the self-titled “Public Advocate of the United States.” So in a recent fund raising letter one of the most famously loony tunes anti-gay activists in the United States described Tampa’s parade thusly:

The event is a full two weeks of seemingly family oriented events, with parades and treasure hunts around the city. But in recent years Radical Homosexuals have been intent on turning it into a two week alcohol fueled display of public debauchery. Organizers started by purposefully making the parade route zig-zag so no one could call it a “straight parade.”

Word is that Radical Homosexuals have infiltrated as event organizers to promote homosexual events that are designed to prey upon unsuspecting college students by enticing them to join their “krewes” and help build parade floats in exchange for free alcohol. When the young men are sufficiently intoxicated, homosexuals dressed as pirates whisk them away to God knows where to take advantage of them sexually. There are even countless stories of any number of immoral sex act being performed by open homosexuals – some even in broad daylight during the event.

WOW! We’ve sure been missing out, so I can’t wait for next year’s parade. In the meantime, be sure to send Eugene a nice fat contribution. I guess he wants to “come” next year too, since in his missive he asks for money.

Gotta love a County that would elect this guy to anything…you go Loudoun

Well, you knew it would be just a matter of time. I think I want one of each. My personal favorite, the one about the Freedom Pat. I can see some Congressman startting to use that to justify TSA.

Earlier this week I was sent one of those emails where you check the stuff  you’ve done, then send it to a bunch of friends. One of the questions was, “Have you ever seen something so beautiful it took your breath away?” I answered yes. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but in this case, I have to say it is absolute frightening idiocy that takes away my breath. People who have no discernible contact with any version of reality known to most of us, believe they have the answers to what ails America. People who are told what to think by the corporate astro-turfers, and believe a crackpot Mormon convert is the second coming. And they want to take America back…back to where…a happier time. What does that mean, we don’t want to advance, we don’t want to move into the future, we don’t want to make our lives and the world better? I don’t get it, and I get more scared every day. Not because we do or don’t have a Muslim President, but because this many people can be so easily duped into believing whatever a few rich corporate astro-turfers tell them to believe.

Christian Values – Burn Another's Holy Book

Just incredible is about all I can say. Gainesville’s Dove World Church, made famous last year for its “No Homo Mayor” campaign, is planning to burn Korans on September 11th.

According to this “Christian Pastor,” it’s OK to burn a Koran because it’s not the Christian holy book, but can you imagine the tantrum and outrage that would follow if a Muslim group planned the same thing for the Bible.

It makes me understand how Anne Rice (after a lifetime as an observant Catholic) can put the following on her Facebook page:

Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten …years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.

As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of …Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.

I can understand her place. It grows increasingly difficult to see people like this pastor wrap themselves in the flag and some sort of militaristic religious ramblings (and there are far too many people who claim Jesus’ message of neighborly love only just so far), and keep up any belief in or desire to associate with them. I would have phrased it differently. I don’t think I could ever quit being Christian, but my reservations about “religion” are growing almost daily.

See the full HypnObama at Zaius Nation (but beware).

It is just astonishing to me the complete crap that has been stirred up over the President of the United States offering an address to school students at the beginning of the school year to encourage to stay in school and work hard. Really, does it get any more anti-American than that? Well, if you’re are a conservative Republican it doesn’t, but there really is logic to the Republicans taking the position they have.

Facts are facts, and the fact is that, statistically speaking, the less education a person has, the more likely they are to vote Republican. The states with highest teen pregnancy rates, the highest dropout rates and lowest performing schools, statistically, are considered Red states. Given that, this tactic makes perfect sense. Why would the Republicans want children to succeed in school?

Unfortunately, and not surprisingly, one of the idiots leading the charge is giant hypocrite and leader of the Florida Republican Party, Jim Greer. Greer issued a statement claiming, among other things:

“indoctrinate America’s children to his socialist agenda.” He added that Obama “has turned to American’s children to spread his liberal lies.” Greer’s hysterical press release said the very idea of a political figure taking a political message to school children is “infuriating” and “an invasive abuse of power.”

I guess Mr. Greer isn’t savvy enough to know about Lexus searches and the like. Unfortunately for Mr. Hypocrite Greer, the Orlando Sentinel did a little digging, and here’s what they found:

There once was a political operative who loved to tell crowds he had a simple way of explaining to children the difference between Republicans and Democrats.

“Republicans get up and go to work,” he would tell his son. “Democrats get up and go down to the mailbox to get their checks.”

This man not only talked to his son about Republican values, he went into public-school classrooms and talked about them as well.

One Seminole County mother, Barbara Wells, remembers the day Greer spoke to her son’s sixth-grade class. “My son said he made some sort of Hillary Clinton joke,” she recalled.

So when asked if had run his pro-Republican message by parents and school officials before he talked to school kids, you most likely won’t be surprise by his answer,”That was different,” Greer said.

Never mind that In 1988, Ronald Reagan pushed his anti-government, low-tax ideology in a speech broadcast to classrooms nationwide, adding that he had supported “Negro” educational institutions. Here’s excerpts:

Hat Tip to Daily Kos

The deranged ranting just defies belief.

The great grand irony here is that, as all know when it comes to kids, all the fuss around this means the kids are going to go on-line and make absolutely sure they see what it was all about…so I find it great fun that kids are going to be going on-line to watch a video about doing good in school.

As a public service, to do my part to advance the cause of communism/facism/nazism/name your evil ‘ism, here’s the text the President’s speech from today. Continue reading »
