Pat Robertson of 700 Club and African Mining infamyI honestly can think of nothing more vile and hateful than the things that come from the mouth of Pat Robertson. Who can forget his blaming feminism and abortion for the attack on the 9/11, Mardi Gras and the people of New Orleans for Katrina’s devastation, and now, as is so often the case, he’s blaming the victims in Haiti for their own misery.

According to Robertson, the reason for the earthquake there, and the poverty of the country is because back during the days of French Colonialism, the Haitians made a pact with Satan to get the French out. I’m thinking it’s someone else that made a pact with the Devil, and he’s a mean and hateful old man who lives in Virginia.

Of course, one of the obvious problems with Robertson’s statement is that both sides of the island were freed from slavery to the French at the same time. The revolution was fought on behalf of the island of Santo Domingo, which in modern days is comprised of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The sacrifice was made on behalf of both countries. So if the Dominican Republic is prosperous and Haiti is struggling I fail to see how the ritual performed in the 1700’s on behalf of the whole island is the cause of the Haiti’s problems.

Honestly, how this guy can sleep at night is a mystery to me. Pat, if you want to see the Devil, look in the mirror.

Bill Keller, a well known televangelist has said voting for Mitt Romney is a vote for Satan.

While some evangelical Christians are defending the presidential candidacy of Mormon Mitt Romney from an attack by Al Sharpton, another prominent pastor is going further in his condemnation – saying a vote for the former Massachusetts governor is a vote for Satan.

…Keller also comes out swinging against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a cult.

“This message today is not about Mitt Romney,” he writes. “Romney is an unashamed and proud member of the Mormon cult founded by a murdering polygamist pedophile named Joseph Smith nearly 200 years ago. The teachings of the Mormon cult are doctrinally and theologically in complete opposition to the Absolute Truth of God’s Word. There is no common ground. If Mormonism is true, then the Christian faith is a complete lie. There has never been any question from the moment Smith’s cult began that it was a work of Satan and those who follow their false teachings will die and spend eternity in hell.”

Not much wiggle room in this position. While this guy also says Oprah Winfrey is the most dangerous woman in America. He says she a new age witch, and complains because she attends a liberal Baptist Church, and compares her to mafia, but he has a huge following on his local week night show here in Tampa, and a huge following on his Live Prayer website.

To fully appreciate the ideology of large parts of the Republican Party, one needs to look past Capitol Hill and consider what state GOP officials are up to. Take Utah, for example.

Several top Republican officials in Utah – including the lieutenant governor, the state attorney general, and U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon – gathered over the weekend for an annual GOP county convention where attendees debated a resolution on immigration. The debate didn’t go well.

Don Larsen, chairman of legislative District 65 for the Utah County Republican Party, had submitted a resolution warning that Satan’s minions want to eliminate national borders and do away with sovereignty.

In a speech at the convention, Larsen told those gathered that illegal immigrants “hate American people” and “are determined to destroy this country, and there is nothing they won’t do.”

Illegal aliens are in control of the media, and working in tandem with Democrats, are trying to “destroy Christian America” and replace it with “a godless new world order – and that is not extremism, that is fact,” Larsen said. […]

Republican officials then allowed speakers to defend and refute the resolution. One speaker, who was identified as “Joe,” said illegal immigrants were Marxist and under the influence of the devil. Another, who declined to give her name to the Daily Herald, said illegal immigrants should not be allowed because “they are not going to become Republicans….”

Wow.

Why We Bless Sneezers

The origin of the “bless you” tradition is not entirely clear. The urban legend experts at Snopes.com list an impressive number of possibilities. One involves the (hopefully) mistaken belief that a human’s soul might escape through a sneeze. Saying “God bless you” wards off Satan while the soul is temporarily vulnerable. I’ve also heard that it was thought, in Biblical times, that a sneeze was an attempt to rid the body of a demon.

Another story veers toward the medical. Once upon an unenlightened time, people believed that the heart stopped during a sneeze. A hearty “God bless you” set the ol’ ticker back in motion. Keep in mind these were the days before defibrillators and HMOs.

Interesting, but the most popular theory comes from the Middle Ages. During the bubonic plague, a sneeze was believed to be a sign of impending death. “God bless you” was “a way of commending his soul to the care of God.” The phrase may have also come in handy to protect oneself if someone nearby sneezed.

Today, “bless you” is more a sign of good manners than a shield against death. If only folks were as courteous about other involuntary bodily functions…
