Unfortunately Alan Grayson is not my representative in Congress, but I sure wish he was. I don’t have anything against Cathy Kastor, my current representative, except that she’s the typical milquetoast Democrat. Alan Grayson doesn’t mind speaking truth to power, and he calls out the talibangelist views of his tea bagger opponent in this ad. And this guy has tried to pass some of his extreme religious views into law in Tallahassee. Democrats should take note, this is how the game has to be played for now.

In fact, maybe Alan Grayson should become head of the Democratic Party.

Earlier this week I was sent one of those emails where you check the stuff  you’ve done, then send it to a bunch of friends. One of the questions was, “Have you ever seen something so beautiful it took your breath away?” I answered yes. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but in this case, I have to say it is absolute frightening idiocy that takes away my breath. People who have no discernible contact with any version of reality known to most of us, believe they have the answers to what ails America. People who are told what to think by the corporate astro-turfers, and believe a crackpot Mormon convert is the second coming. And they want to take America back…back to where…a happier time. What does that mean, we don’t want to advance, we don’t want to move into the future, we don’t want to make our lives and the world better? I don’t get it, and I get more scared every day. Not because we do or don’t have a Muslim President, but because this many people can be so easily duped into believing whatever a few rich corporate astro-turfers tell them to believe.

Thanks to the amazing Chase Whiteside at New Left Media for keeping his cool and not laughing in the face of the inanity.

This entry is part 1 of 1 in the series Say It To My Face

Here’s the first in a brand new series at Deep Something. I’m sick and tired of hearing the Republicans and krazy kristian kooks like the American Family Association and Tony Perkins and many others just make shit up about gay people and the issues faced by LGBT people in this country (and around the world). They do it because they get to try to hide behind press releases, podiums, security and websites. So I’ve decided to call them out. I’m going to find a number and do my best to get through to them or their staff person, and I intend to respectfully and thoughtfully challenge them to say it to my face (or at least over the phone).

First up was Orrin Hatch early this week. The Utah Senator was at a town hall meeting in St. George, UT when he decided he needed to snuggle up to the Tea Baggers. So Hatch said, “Gays and lesbians don’t pay tithing, their religion is politics.”

So I called Senator Hatch’s office. I explained to the staffer the reason for my call, and expressed my disgust at the fact that the Senator would just make up a statement like this without even knowing me. I asked him to explain why the Senator would say such a thing. Naturally, his first response was to claim the Senator didn’t really mean it “that way.” So I asked him to explain in “what way” the Senator meant it…which he couldn’t. So then he admitted he didn’t know why the Senator would say that, so I asked to speak to the Senator to get that understanding. He was, of course, too busy.

I responded that I suspected the Senator wasn’t too busy, but was just not man-enough to say it to my face. I then asked the staff person, given that Senator Hatch could go around just making up stuff about me, could I just go around making up stuff about the Senator…that maybe I should issue a statement saying the Senator and me had been engaged in a many-years running torrid homosexual affair that included drugs and drunken debauchery?

I loved the staffers immediate response (before he started trying to roll back his statement…you could definitely picture him trying to reach through the phone and pull the words back in). He said, “Why would you want to do that, then you’d just be stooping to his level.” Indeed Senator.

“Glenn Beck is a logical thinker.”

up-with-teabaggingThese are interviews with the 60,00 to 70,000 people who turned out for the big Tea Bagger March in Washington. Apparently, you don’t have to really know anything about what you’re protesting. It’s all just bad because it is Obama, and some industry or media flak like Glenn Beck told you to be mad and scared.

The Tea Bagger protests were against, well, a lot of things, including health insurance reform, the IRS, abortion, global warming, and our “socialist/communist/fascist/Nazi/Muslim ” president, Barack Obama. Some of them called for a return to McCarthyism, while others called for Glenn Beck to run for office–indeed, it seemed the only thing that everyone agreed on was Fox News.

I find it strange how these are the Americans who were in support of spending close to $700 Billion on the War in Iraq killing their civilians but they are? against providing equal government regulated universal health-care to every American citizen that is similar to those who are in the military get

And even more surreal is this that these same anti-nazi/socialism/facism villagers aren’t willing to give anyone else a voice if it dissents from their own. So let’s see, what is one of the characteristics of socialism…oh yeah, that would be the idea of forceably quelling dissent.

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), one of the extreme right-wing fringe groups, has what they think is a hip new campaign they called 2M4M. Kind of like the tea-baggers, I’m guessing they didn’t think through the title completely before going public.

But that’s just fine, since it gives us all plenty to laugh about. And Joe Sudbay at Americablog has tipped me off to hilarious video by Andy Cobb about the 2M4M initiative by NOM.
