The X-Files: I Want to Believe – A Movie Review
It is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show’s most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits.

This may come as a shocker, but I never got into X-Files. I just wasn’t able to watch a number of episodes, so when I did watch, I felt as if there was plenty of background I didn’t have that would help me understand what was going on in any particular episode. So I was a bit skeptical about the movie. Let me be clear here, you don’t have to know anything about the series to watch the movie. And in point of fact, it’s not a terrible movie as a “stand-alone” product. The story is interesting with lots of intersecting plotlines, and enough culled from today’s headlines to make one wonder (read the stories about the feet that keep washing up in Nova Scotia). The characters all play their parts well, and the tension between Mulder and Scully is still there, even if it has gone to a different level.
The problem is, it was clearly made as a stand-alone product for the purpose of its box office draw, and I think the movie is less for having taken that approach. The fact is, X-Files was about the search for proof of aliens. Sure, they had a few episodes about physics and other topics, but in the end, that was Mulder’s search. What he’s dedicated his life to was not a part of this movie at all, so I was a little disappointed, and I suspect true X-Files fans are going to be greatly disappointed. So this one gets a mixed review.
