New Mexico-The Next Big Thing?
Who would have ever thought that New Mexico would become the new nexus for gay rights? A week or so ago, in response to the recent Supreme Court rulings, Dona Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins started issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. As of today, she’s issued about 91. And just today, in response to a lawsuit filed by two men, District Judge Sarah Singleton issued an order which mandates that Santa Fe County Clerk Geraldine Salazar issue the marriage licenses or appear in court to tell the judge why that shouldn’t happen.
Of course, leave it to Republicans to try to bridge us back to the 18th century. Republican Sen. William Sharer of Farmington said a lawsuit will be filed, potentially by the end of the week, seeking a court order to stop County Clerk Lynn Ellins. “It has to do with a county clerk cannot make law.”
All of this on the heels of this week’s ruling in New Mexico finding against a wedding photographer for refusing service to a lesbian couple.
The march continues.
