Sweet Home Alabama
Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. As CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann reports, under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.
"I don’t look at it as censorship," says State Representative Gerald Allen. "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."
So, no Walt Whitman, no Tennessee Williams, no Gore Vidal, no Truman Capote, no Christopher Isherwood, no E.M. Forster, no James Baldwin, no Hart Crane, no Allan Ginsberg, no Edna St. Vincent Millay, no Langston Hughes, no Edward Albee, no Willa Cather, no T.E. Lawerence, no W. Somerset Maugham, no Andre Gide, no Howard Ashman, no Marcel Proust, no Christopher Marlowe, no Gertude Stein, no Virginia Woolf…Wilde, Auden, Plato, Aristophanes and – by the terms of the bill – the complete works of shakespeare. (If you think Antonio in the Merchant of Venice isn’t gay, reread the play carefully).
The sickness is spreading at a rapid pace. Next will be gay screen writers, gay actors, gay chefs, gay starbucks workers, gay Wal-mart employees…oh wait a second..they don’t make enough money to count. The next question is where will Ken Mehlman go? I wonder if the ban would apply to all the Bush administration staff that did it with Gannon/Guckert?
Didn’t I see something like this before? Oh that’s right – the nazis rounded up gay books, movies and people! I remember now – the holocaust where what was it – 1/2 million to 1 million gay people were killed by the nazis as the catholic church stood by cheerleading. It’s always amazing how the crooks, criminals and evil individuals accuse others of their own actions…
