W Proud Elections Not Cancelled. Huh?
From yesterday’s presidential radio address:
One freedom that defines our way of life is the freedom to choose our leaders at the ballot box. We saw that freedom earlier this week, when millions of Americans went to the polls to cast their votes for a new Congress. Whatever your opinion of the outcome, all Americans can take pride in the example our democracy sets for the world by holding elections even in a time of war.” (emphasis added)
We should be “proud” that the federal government didn’t cancel our elections? That the Bush administration didn’t use the war as an excuse to interrupt the democratic process? Sounds to me like a tinge of regret he didn’t cancel them.
Again, facism doesn’t appear in a black trench coat and goose-stepping jack boots. First, he makes it OK just say we’re going to torture people. Then he wants to make it OK to talk about suspending habeas corpus, then listen in on phone conversations without warrants….then Congress approves it all after he starts doing it anyway.
Now comes the beginning of the discussion to suspend elections. We start talking about it now, to make it OK in 2008. He puts the possibility into the lexicon, then in ’08 he can remind everyone how we didn’t do in ’06, but conditions are different now, and much more dangerous.
Let’s all please remember something…we are NOT at war. That quaint little document (as our esteemed Attorney General calls it), the Constitution, grants only to Congress the authority to declare war. The United States Congress has not declared war.
Even during the civil war elections were held. Remember, this administration looked into postponing elections if there was a threat of a terrorist attack. These are truly paranoid people.
