OK, out comes the tinfoil hat in regards to BP shutting down this Alaskan pipeline.

Of course I want the environment protected, but doesn’t it seem a bit strange that BP is just now suddenly discovering that their pipe is rusting? Have they not had an on-going maintenance program?

Let’s face it, they are in trouble for a big spill back in March when 6,400 barrels were spilled. This spill was relatively minor.

I think they are using this to keep the Administration from taking any adverse regulatory action for the first spill. I suspect they are sending the message to Washington regulators, “You wanna go after us…come on. We’ll just shut down production and run up gas prices even more as your approach an election.” Do you think maybe some Republicans in Washington are sweating bullets about now having to face their constiuents in a couple of months with gas pricing rising again?

I expect you will see production come back on line a lot sooner than projected, and just some very small fines for the first spill.

Why Do Beans Give Us Gas?

This question reminds us of that ancient proverb, as recited by Bart Simpson: “Beans, beans, the musical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot.” Bart speaks the truth, for few foods inspire as much gastrointestinal activity as a plate full of beans. Hold your breath as we sniff out the science behind the smells.Kidz World explains that beans contain sugars the human body simply cannot digest. Once these sugars (called oligosaccharides) reach a person’s lower intestines, “the bacteria go berserk, start feasting, and make loads of gas.” Before you know it — toxic fumes.

This rather amusing list of “fart facts” states the most “offensive sugars” are raffinose, stachiose, and verbascose, all of which are found in beans. The site goes on to explain that while it’s possible to ignite a fart, it’s definitely not recommended, as severe injury and a potentially humiliating trip to the emergency room can result.

What if you’re a considerate bean lover who doesn’t wish to punish your friends and family? We found a recipe for preparing dry baked beans that enables you to enjoy the musical fruit without causing a cacophony of side effects. Bon appetit.

While you and I are cringing with every stop at a filling station, the big oil companies are raking in the big bucks.

Hooray for Big Oil! Shell only delivered a 68% rise in net profits but yes, they’re still getting by and making ends meet. Thankfully the GOP is there to support them during their time of need.

Exxon Mobil Corp., the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, on Thursday said quarterly profit surged 75 percent to nearly $10 billion, raking in a bonanza from record oil prices. The profit was the highest in the company’s history, surpassing the record it set in the 2004 fourth quarter. Revenue jumped 32 percent to just over $100 billion.
