I was in Washington most of last week on business. Lay flew in Friday afternoon, and we spent the weekend touring.

We did most of touristy things including the Air and Space Museum out near Dulles that Friday afternoon. Saturday and Sunday were spent mostly downtown around the Mall. I’d not been to the Air and Space Museum so that was cool. This was Lay’s first trip at all.

Earlier this week I was sent one of those emails where you check the stuff  you’ve done, then send it to a bunch of friends. One of the questions was, “Have you ever seen something so beautiful it took your breath away?” I answered yes. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but in this case, I have to say it is absolute frightening idiocy that takes away my breath. People who have no discernible contact with any version of reality known to most of us, believe they have the answers to what ails America. People who are told what to think by the corporate astro-turfers, and believe a crackpot Mormon convert is the second coming. And they want to take America back…back to where…a happier time. What does that mean, we don’t want to advance, we don’t want to move into the future, we don’t want to make our lives and the world better? I don’t get it, and I get more scared every day. Not because we do or don’t have a Muslim President, but because this many people can be so easily duped into believing whatever a few rich corporate astro-turfers tell them to believe.

Bob and Henry Married after 64 Years

This entry is part 24 of 35 in the series Gay Marriage

This is a great Pride Month story. These two Washington, DC residents have lived together for 64 years (they have known each other longer than that). Now, thanks to marriage equality in Washington, they were able to get married last Saturday. As the Rev. John DeTaeye said, “By your actions today you remind us that God is love, and love is for everyone.”

Henry says he’s excited about it, but says that Bob doesn’t get excited, but gets nervous. Henry goes on to say they’ve stayed together so long because they have an agreement. Henry’s always right, and Bob gets his way.

The American Taliban (religious right wingnut conservatives or “krazy konservative kooks) now have a chance to show that they really do intent to “protect marriage.” They are always claiming that marriage is all about procreation and children. To respond to this stupidity, a group in Washington state is going to attempt a very ingenious ballot initiative.

Obviously, it’s absurd on its face and it’s meant to be.  But so is saying that same-sex marriages/unions shouldn’t be sanctioned because same-sex couples can’t conceive children.  Honestly, I’ve been married for a very long time.  I cannot understand how allowing same sex couples to have their unions legally sanctioned at all negatively affects my marriage.  Who is making more of a mockery of marriage: a gay couple wanting to have their relationship recognized or Republican would-be candidates like Gingrich or Guiliani both on their third marriages?

NWCN.com via RawStory:

An initiative filed by proponents of same-sex marriage would require heterosexual couples to have kids within three years or else have their marriage annulled.

Initiative 957 was filed by the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. That group was formed last summer after the state Supreme Court upheld Washington’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Under the initiative, marriage would be limited to men and women who are able to have children. Couples would be required to prove they can have children in order to get a marriage license, and if they did not have children within three years, their marriage would be subject to annulment.

All other marriages would be defined as “unrecognized” and people in those marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

“For many years, social conservatives have claimed that marriage exists solely for the purpose of procreation … The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine,” said WA-DOMA organizer Gregory Gadow in a printed statement. “If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they can not have children together, it follows that all couples who cannot or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage.”
