Birds of a Feather

Ken Gay’s latest supporter graphic features Republican state representatives Danny Alvarez, Traci Koster and Michael Owen. Once you look at their education records, the endorsements require very little explanation. Alvarez and Koster backed Florida’s expansion of private-school scholarships and HB 1069, with its restrictions on sexual-orientation and gender-identity instruction and pronoun use. Owen has supported similar school-choice policies and legislation expanding religious expression in public schools.

The consequences of those LGBTQ-related policies are harder to shrug off as another Tallahassee culture-war hobby. Trevor Project research found that LGBTQ+ students attending schools with even one anti-LGBTQ+ policy reported higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicide attempts. Its 2023 research also found lower suicide-attempt rates among students with affirming school supports, including teachers who respected transgender and nonbinary students’ pronouns. Apparently, treating children with dignity has measurable benefits. Who knew?

So “birds of a feather” seems an apt description of the policy overlap. The same group supporting Gay has repeatedly backed moving education dollars toward private alternatives while supporting restrictions that fall particularly hard on LGBTQ+ students. The question behind the endorsements is worth examining: what does that agenda mean inside a public-school system charged with educating every child who walks through its doors?

Bi-Vocational Martyrdom and the Pronoun Police: Crying Wolf in a Library

This entry is in the series Daily Douche-Bag

Tony Perkins is mad again. This time, it’s because his “bi-vocational” pastor buddy got fired from a public library job for refusing to call a coworker by their chosen pronouns. Perkins calls it persecution. I call it what happens when someone mistakes rudeness for righteousness. This essay cuts through the drama, mocks the martyr complex, and reminds Pastor Luke that if you want respect, you might try giving some. Being a public employee means treating the public like people — all of them.

Guardians of Morality-Can You Say “Glass House”

This entry is in the series Hate Groups

Moms for Liberty wants to save your children from books, drag queens, and anything with a rainbow. But maybe they should’ve checked their own guest list before handing out “medals of moral excellence.” South Carolina State Rep. RJ May, recently honored by the group, was arrested and charged with distributing child sex abuse material, including files showing himself engaged in sex acts with underage girls. Yes, you read that right. The man Moms for Liberty hailed as a protector of children was allegedly doing the exact thing he claimed to fight.

Judge William Jung-Douchebag of the Day

This entry is in the series Daily Douche-Bag

In 2017, Tampa passed an ordinance that prohibited conversion therapy for children under 18. As they always do, Liberty Counsel and their perpetual “client,” Las Vegas-based Robert Vazzo (not even a resident of Florida), and a David Pickup of Dallas (not licensed in Florida) filed a lawsuit to get the ordinance overturned. However, Republican Trump-appointee William Jung had to bend himself into a Gordian Knot of legal reasoning to give them that win.

Rick Wiles Tries to Out-Crazy Lance Wallnau

As I posted Yesterday, “Pastor” Lance Wallnau was saying Trump should, like other dictators, be able to kill his opponents. Well, I guess “Pastor” Rike Wiles didn’t like Wallnau getting all the attention, so he’s now claiming that Democrats will “slaughter” tens of thousands of Christians if they win the midterm elections.

Frightening Christians In the Trump Regime

This one will scare the crap out of you. Krazy Kristian Kook, Lance Wallanau, slipped up and gave us a glimpse behind the curtain in a YouTube where he openly wished that Trump could give his Democratic critics the same treatment that dissidents get in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. As Thomas Jefferson said, “In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.”

Senator McCain – Hardly the Lion

This is tough to write, as I’m struggling a bit with my feelings concerning Senator John McCain. McCain is being lionized by the media and political pundit class. While I respect his service and many of his accomplishments, he was hardly the maverick he fancied himself, and leaves a mixed political legacy, and ironically, much of the blame for the ascendency of Donald Trump.

Franklin Graham – Douche Bag of the Day

This entry is in the series Daily Douche-Bag

I didn’t bother to check I am so certain this won’t be Graham’s first Douchey. This time it is for his comment that Donald Trump’s affairs (and I presume many other sins) are personal, not public, so they don’t matter. The nation’s so-called moral guardians, Evangelical Fundamentalists, gave Trump a “mulligan” for it as long as he gives them what they want on culture-war issues, and Graham is leading the way.

Kansas Sen Steve Fitzgerald – Douche Bag of the Day

This entry is in the series Daily Douche-Bag

Well, Senator Fitzgerald came to our attention when he was mentioned in an article about yesterday’s Douche Bag of the Day winner. Fitzgerald went on an all too common rant on the Kansas Senate Floor about the “Gay Agenda,” as his argument for a bill allowing funding to adoption agencies that object to placing children with LGBT couples.

Republican Tom Cox of KS – Douche Bag Award Winner

This one is just kind of outside our usual realm of notice, but we decided his action was just deplorable enough to warrant recognition with our Douche Bag of the Day award. Republican Tom Cox is a member of the Kansas house of Representatives representing the Shawnee-Lake Quivira district of good old KS, and he underhandedly changed his vote to make it possible for adoption agencies in KS to receive state funds AND discriminate against LGBT people.

Another Gun Argument – The Jews Argument

This entry is in the series Guns

Someone I’m friends with on Facebook shared a post by someone I don’t know named, Monica Bailey. The post is one of those with the photo of all the shoes of Jews from one of the death camps. We saw a display of these at the Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg a couple of years ago, and it is heart-wrenching. But, of course nothing is reaching too low for the gun nuts, so that whole pile of shoes is just the result of the Jews giving up their guns to Hitler.
