Well, Senator Fitzgerald came to our attention when he was mentioned in an article about yesterday’s Douche Bag of the Day winner, Kansas Rep. Tom Cox. Fitzgerald went on an all too common rant on the Kansas Senate Floor about the “Gay Agenda,” as part of his arguments to vote for a bill that would allow continued funding to Kansas adoption agencies that have a religious objection to placing children with LGBT couples.

I try to avoid reading about Kansas politics as reading about Florida and North Carolina’s bullshit is bad enough, but this just came to my attention, and I’m surprised at just how backward the country is slipping. According to the Wichita Eagle, “‘There is no homosexual agenda.’ I was being told that when people were saying that there was one. And now we find out there is an agenda. And what was once tolerated is now becoming dominant and is intolerant. Totally intolerant.”

But as with most of these Douche Bags, sticking to the topic at hand isn’t enough, we’re apparently bringing about the end of civilization (never mind the carnage being wrought by Republicans across the land and their Dear Leader, Donald Trump). The Eagle reports that Fitzgerald  went on to say:

“There is a lot of concentrated effort at destroying Western civilization. A fundamental of civilization is the family. What’s the family based on? Marriage. What’s marriage? A man and a woman. No it’s not a theory. No it’s not an opinion. No it’s not a doctrine. It’s an ontological truth.”

He added: “So this is a way station on the way in our decline, the decline of our civilization.” By the way, he’s running for Congress in Kansas District 2.

Are we ever going to get past this kind of stupid and insidious ignorant crap? I am starting to think the answer is “no.” But here you go Steve, for your intentional ignorance, deeply held bigotry, and desire to play to base emotions for political points, here’s your Douche Bag of the Day Award.
