An App You Have To Get-JFK Moonshot

I almost never rave about a phone app, but in case you haven’t seen anything about this one, you really have to get the JFK Moonshot app (available for Android and iPhone). This is about the coolest thing I’ve seen and sets a pretty high bar for Augmented Reality.

It was created by Digitas and the JFK Library. Here’s that Digitas has on their website:

Digitas, The Connected Marketing Agency, in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, today announced the release of JFK Moonshot, a first-of-its-kind augmented reality simulation app experience to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing and President Kennedy’s vision that launched the effort. JFK Moonshot is the first-ever full-scale augmented reality simulation of the Saturn V Rocket launch and will take users on the five-day journey from the Earth to the Moon. Digitas teamed up with UNIT9, a global production partner, to create the app.

The app immerses you in the Apollo 11 mission starting with a first-ever full-scale recreation of the 363-ft Saturn V Rocket. You can, looking at the model through the phone walk around it and zoom in and out. Then, when you’re ready, you can launch and follow the rocket up to the ceiling. From there you can track progress to the moon, and there are some games to play. To put it bluntly, it’s pretty badass. According to Digitas:

  • First-ever full-scale AR recreation of the 363-ft Saturn V launch on its landing pad outside of the JFK Library in Boston or place the tabletop AR rocket to see it ready for takeoff anywhere in the world.
  • Longest-running AR powered live-stream experience available, the app will take users on the five-day journey (July 16th-20th) from the Earth to the Moon.
  • The mission simulation is made possible by combining 3D digital assets and actual archival footage and audio recordings.

I’m rating this one a 9. Let us know what you think.
