Energy Bill Compensates Big Oil

AP reports, “a provision in a House-passed energy bill would require federal compensation to private companies for costs associated with oil and gas leases that can’t be developed.” Specifically, the provision states that “if a permit denial or some other government action prevents a lease from being explored or developed,” taxpayers will be responsible for forking over billions to the oil companies to “compensate” them.

Last night, President Bush said the “whole goal” of his Social Security plan was to make sure ” nobody retired in poverty.” Bush’s sudden concern about “poverty” is touching, but millions of Americans could use the help before they retire. In President Bush’s first term, poverty rose for three straight years, especially for children.

Indeed, aside from the printed obituaries in metro sections of dailies, there is little acknowledgment by the government or substantial reporting in the media of the soldiers who perish in Iraq and the families they leave behind. We do not see or hear them. They die alone on the hot sands of Iraq and their survivors grieve privately on American soil.
