?We have heard a lot about “saving Christmas” during the last couple of Decembers. With people whipped into a frenzy by right wing pundits, it has become all the rage among certain branches of Christianity to protest by boycotting any retailer who makes mention of “Happy Holidays” or to sue local governments who balk at manger scenes on the town square. All this is apparently done for the purpose of reminding America of the “true meaning” of Christmas. But boycotts and lawsuits are hardly the substance of the Christmas season, as anyone with only a passing familiarity with the Gospels will no doubt attest.?

What’s offensive here is not the imperfect balancing of minority and majority. What’s offensive — also surreal and absurd — is the notion that Christianity, a faith claimed by 76 percent of all Americans, is somehow being intimidated into nonexistence. Some of the earliest Christians were stoned for their beliefs. In some parts of the world today, Christianity is a crime punishable by death. And the AFA is feeling persecuted because a sales clerk says “Happy holidays?”

This Week's Stupid Is As Stupid Does

It appears that, along with Bill O’Reilly, the Right Wingnut organization, American Family Association is threatening boycotts and complaining because some companies are using “Happy Holidays” in their advertising instead of “Merry Christmas.” If these goof-balls really gave a shit about observing the holiday, the real issue would be forcing these stores to actually close in observance of the holiday so their employees can enjoy one day off each year.

Intelligent Design is Not Good For Religion

ID is not helped by the fact that it is perceived to be part of a wider socio-political agenda being pushed by certain groups in the USA, and unfortunately ID has become rather encumbered by its association with the aims of the Right in US politics. As a result, those who reject the policies of the Right often reject ID and also Christianity as being a part of the same package.
