Rick Warren Screws Himself All Around
Some days it’s better to just stay in bed, or, as Mark Twain said, “Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” Rick Warren, darling of the “intellectual evangelicals,” is learning that lesson the hard way this week after an appearance on Larry King Live.
Obviously I don’t agree with the evangelical view on homosexuality, and believe they are misreading the Bible based on many years of misinterpretation by their clerics, but I understand their right to believe as they wish. One thing, though, I’m fairly clear about is that lying is pretty much frowned upon throughout the Bible, yet Warren decides to play fast and loose with the truth.
Warren tells King that he never came out in support of California’s Proposition 8 or campaigned for it’s passage. He said:
Yes, you know, Larry, there was a story within a story that never got told. In the first place, I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist. I never have been, never will be. During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never – never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going.
The week before the – the vote, somebody in my church said, Pastor Rick, what – what do you think about this? And I sent a note to my own members that said, I actually believe that marriage is – really should be defined, that that definition should be – say between a man and a woman. And then all of a sudden out of it, they made me, you know, something that I really wasn’t.
I never campaigned for it. I never – I’m not an anti-gay activist – never have been. Never participated in a single event. I just simply made a note in a newsletter. And, of course, everything I write it’s – it’s (INAUDIBLE).
There’s just a little problem with that, Warren in LYING. Somehow, I guess accidentally and without his knowledge, his little note in a newsletter turned into a professionally produced video posted on YouTube prior to the vote.

Warren goes on to tell King that he never compared homosexuality to incest, polygamy, and child molestation.
There were some things said that – you know, everybody should have 10 percent grace when they say public statements. And I was asked a question that made it sound like I equated gay marriage with pedophilia or incest, which I absolutely do not believe.
Once again, the nose grows longer. Back in December, in an interview…without the question being raised in that context, Warren had said the following to an interviewer:
Rick Warren: But the issue to me is, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.
Steven Waldman: Do you think, though, that they are equivalent to having gays getting married?
Rick Warren: Oh I do.
You can read a complete report of this little interview over with our friends at Box Turtle Bulletin.
Warren goes on to claim he’s even written all his gay friends (yes, he claims to have many) and gay leaders (the evil ones plotting the destruction of America by destroying the institution of marriage) to apologize.
So, Warren is now in a pretty tough situation:
- Gay people are mad at him for many things, but mainly for his support of Proposition 8 and taking away rights.
- Thinking people everywhere are mad at him for lying about it later on.
- And now the evangelical community is mad at him for claiming to back-off his past statements of hate.
Onenewsnow.com, Don Wildmon’s hate rag, is reporting that Dr. Jim Garlow, the senior pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in the San Diego suburb of La Mesa and a leader in the Prop. 8 effort in California has said:
“Historically when institutions and individuals back away from convictional biblical truth, it is driven primarily by one single factor — and that is the respectability of other people. In other words, much more caring about what other people think about them than what God thinks about them.”
And you should read some of the comments left about him at the end of this article by the good christian folk who visit One News Now:
Mr. Warren should quit his job. Plain & simple. You can’t be on the center of the fence Ricky, you are either for God or mammon, it is apparent that everytime you open your mouth about these things we see more of mammon. One of the last things that God put you here for is to say that inagural prayer so that the name of Jesus Christ could be heard even in the most remote places, since that is done, quit.
I think that is the tool of the devil to separate the sheep from the under-shepherd and he certainly succeeded in Rick Warren case on marriage.
Take a stand and show Warren how we feel. I, for one, will be mailng him back his books. They no longer have a place in my home. (But just so you know…he’s already received the royalty, so he doesn’t care if you send them back to him…he can sell them again as used on Amazon.)
Can anyone be surprised by the latest compromise from Warren? Surely a ‘pastor’ for the end times.
Personally, I think Pastor Warren should be removed from his position as pastor of Saddleback Church. He is obviously NOT preaching or speaking according to God’s Word.
And I could go on, but you get the picture. As I said above, some days it’s just better to not get up.
