Lay and I went to see this movie Friday night after Thanksgiving over at the Mall in Shelby, N.C. We were both disappointed. Maybe my expectations were set wrong. Too many subplots, half of which could/should be cut or vastly trimmed. Finally, the closing ‘sermon’ on violence has little relation to the themes developed in the previous two hours. The movie does capture the Kennedy ‘mystique’–using actual footage–but fails to cohere as a whole. Not Altmanesque enough; few can do well the kind of ensemble piece which R.A. has worked 40 years perfecting. Nonetheless, I cried at the end–the overwhelming ‘what-ifs’ of the Bobby phenomenon are haunting reminders of the differences between the much-maligned Kennedy ‘dynasty’ and the Bush one currently in operation. Sharon Stone is marvellous, as are most of the performances; guess the fundamental problem is in the script.
