Projection Much

Friend of David Duke and the KKK, Tony Perkins, head of the SPLC designated hate group, The Family Research Council (FRC) has released maybe one of the most stupid press releases I’ve ever seen. The real kicker comes near end of his rant. “And liberals wonder why women are turned off! After an entire campaign built on ‘lady parts,’ more women are waking up to the contempt Democrats have for them.” This is the classic Karl Rove tactic. Accuse the other side of exactly what you are guilty of doing. In fact, I think the Republican Party is focus group testing replacing the word “rapist” with “givers of gifts from God.”

Pictures From Washington

I was in Washington most of last week on business. Lay flew in Friday afternoon, and we spent the weekend touring. We did most of touristy things including the Air and Space Museum out near Dulles that Friday afternoon. Saturday and Sunday were spent mostly downtown around the Mall. I’d not been to the Air and Space Museum so that was cool. This was Lay’s first trip at all.

One Big Step

OK, this is one of those WOW! kind of things. Austrian Felix Baumgartner used a ballon to climb to over 128,000 feet, stepped out of a capsule, and jumped. Because he was in the very thin air of the stratosphere, during his 4 minute free fall, he reached a speed of 834.4 miles per hour (that’s Mach 1.24)…faster than the speed of sound. This on the same day 65 years ago when Chuck Yeagar became the first human to go faster than the speed of sound. Yeager used a rocket plane. Yeager was able to do it this year using just a space suit.

Fauxto Op

Truly, it is hard to imagine anything more feckless than what the Ryan/Romney campaign pulled a day or two ago when they decided to make an unscheduled stop at an already closed soup kitchen. Paul Ryan and the family took time out from their busy campaign schedule to wash previously cleaned pots in an empty and closed soup kitchen. Of course, this little stunt did allow Paul Ryan to double his private sector work experience. It seems to be the perfect metaphor for the Romney/Ryan Campaign.

A Bit of Tingle Up the Spine

Yesterday, I had decided to clean out the closet here in the office. I’d let it get totally unorganized, and I had more unneeded crap in there than one can shake a stick at. Don’t ask me why, but I think I had the box from every cell phone I ever owned. As I finally got worked down to the bottom of the closet, on the floor in a back corner was a Target bag. As my good friend Chef Rick would say, “I said to myself; self, what could be in there?”

Weight Loss-Updated

I haven’t written much about this because it’s kind of embarrassing, but if you know me, you know I’m a big guy, and I have always been a big guy. However, over the past 5 or 6 years especially, I’d really put on a lot of weight. I finally reached that breaking point, and realized I had to deal with it, so what follows are some random thoughts I’ve had about weight and weight-loss.

Legitimate Rape?

So there’s tons of furor over Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-DB)(Doucebag) comments about how, in the case of a “legitimate” rape, a woman can’t get pregnant. There’s plenty there to be furious over, but he’s vowed to stay in. And he’s still leading his opponent. That’s because lots people (even some of the ones who have been distancing themselves from Akin) actually believe some of the bullshit he’s let slip out.

Bernie – A Movie Review

In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs.

Back with My Thoughts on the Aurora Shooting

Everyone needs to just take a breath, and let’s bring some sanity to the discussion. We all want to know why. We want to understand how this person came to this place. We want to assign some motivation, some identifiable cause. We want to blame someone or something so it will look like we can control these situations. We want these answers because we want to be safe. Blame doesn’t mend the families or even the nation. The answers given so far are little more than bandages that easily fail after just a few dips in reality. Because there isn’t a good answer, we need to just stop and say a prayer for the families and friends of the victims in Aurora and a scared nation.

Pastor Worley Congregant Fail

Some years back I came across a rather long essay that speaks to what I see so much of evidence of today in regards to gay rights, and right here was a prime example. I wish I could find that essay again. The author looked at all the times throughout history society experienced a great sea-change. The main point was that progress always, ultimately, wins, but as these changes begin, and less-enlightened people begin to the see the change coming, they become scared. People generally don’t like change, and some people just can’t imagine a world different from the one they’ve created (or been told to create). So out of this fear emerges resistance, and this resistance escalates over time as the change becomes more pronounced. It’s the old “wild animal backed into a corner” example.
