Goodbye Ms. Sugarbaker

I woke yesterday listening to NPR as always, only to hear the sad news that Dixie Carter had died. She was 70 years old and is survived by her husband, Hal Holbrook, and two children. I guess most people know her as that steel magnolia, Julia Sugarbaker, from the TV Series Designing Women. I certainly remember that, as it was always one of my favorite shows. Besides some fine comedy, and a great cast, they were very progressive for their time, and that was usually expressed through one of Julia’s soliloquies. I’ve included one of the more famous, “The Nights The Lights Went Out in Georgia.”

Quick Change Artists on America’s Got Talent

Okay, this may have been around for a while, but I had not seen it, and I’m amazed. This is a performance by a couple named David and Dania on “America’s Got Talent”. Even in one change, you can kind of see the dress change while it’s on her, but I can not for the life of me figure out how it’s done.

A Good Friend Who Doesn’t Know He’s a Good Friend

Carl Kasell is retiring from NPR as the Morning Edition news anchor after holding the job for 30 years since the inception of the program. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Carl Kasell, and I don’t think I’d ever seen a picture of him until his retirement was announced this week, but I knew that voice as well as that of my best friends.

It Would Be Funny If It Weren't So Scary

These are interviews with the 60,00 to 70,000 people who turned out for the big Tea Bagger March in Washington. Apparently, you don’t have to really know anything about what you’re protesting. It’s all just bad because it is Obama, and some industry or media flak like Glenn Beck told you to be mad and scared.
