Big Doings for Labor Day At Our House »

It was a big weekend for us this weekend, but in the end, I did get some rest after Saturday. The weekend started Friday afternoon with Lay’s Graduation Ceremony from the Fire Academy.

Hometown Pounded by Tornados »

What now appears to have maybe two tornados pounded my hometown of Kings Mountain Tuesday evening. West Kings Mountain out through Bethlehem and Oak Grove communities seem to have been hit the hardest. Fortunately, Mom only had a few limbs down in her yard.

So Where Have I Been Lately »

If you’re a regular visitor (or you receive the digest email) I suppose you have noticed a decided lack of activity here lately. I have to tell you, I’ve just been tired. I think that’s the best way to describe what’s been going on in my life lately. It’s not that feeling of “being sick and tired of being sick and tired,” but more a general malaise that came over me during the last months. I didn’t send out Christmas cards this year, and didn’t even decorate the house. I came into the season with a good deal of the shopping done, and combined with some upcoming time off, I was actually looking forward to the holiday, but somewhere along the way, I just sort of lost that holiday spirit. I’m working on a comeback.

A Visit to North Carolina »

No blogging or politics last week, as I was on the road from Monday to Friday. I drove up North Carolina because we had a business meeting in Burlington Wednesday, and then I took two days off, visited Mom and drove home. It was actually a pleasant week. i also took some photos around Kings Mountain and Shelby.

A Long Winter’s Nap »

Today, it’s cool and overcast. We’ve had rain for a good bit of the morning. I was up at 8:30 so I could give our friends Mike and Jeff (and Jeff’s sister and lover) a ride to the Tampa Stadium. They are attending the Outback Bowl. Jeff was not at all interested in going to begin with, but the weather really made him want to stay home.

I’ll be Home For Christmas »

One of the traditions that has developed is attending a Christmas Eve service of Lessons and Carols, followed by Communion and a candlelight service. Both services at the church were very full, with people in the balcony during the first service. It’s a time and place to feel comfortable. While there are many people there I don’t know, there are certainly lots of people I grew up with, and even older folks that helped me grow up.

First Weekend of December 2006 »

Wrapping up Thanksgiving 2006 »

We had a pretty typical Thanksgiving. As I’ve already reported, I drove to North Carolina last Monday, and then met friends up in Boone/Blowing Rock on Tuesday. Wednesday I stuck close to home and spent the day with Mom, and had dinner with her and some of her friends. It was overcast and rainy most of the day Wednesday.

Evening With an Old Friend in Dallas »

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m in Dallas this weekend and most of the coming week. The only good thing was I got to see an old friend. Robert and his lover had been previously invited to dinner at the home of some friends. I went along, and it was a very nice eveniing. They were a very nice couple, and one was an excellent cook. It was a much more relaxed and comfortable way to spend an evening than sitting in a restaurant.

Remember The Late Night College Bull Sessions? »

In Eggers dorm at ASU, because I was a Resident Assistant, I’d often find myself hanging out in the Resident Director’s apartment with friends chewing over the great questions of life. (At least when Larry “Rainbow” Johnson was the RD.) Anyway, I want to try to get back to just a little of that. While sitting around in same room isn’t so practical in this forum, at least this opens the discussion to a lot of people.

Weekend Update-July 23, 2006 »

This weekend was fairly slow and quiet. Friday evening I did a major cleaning on the pool pump. The pool’s been cloudy a lot lately, so finally I just broke it completely down. Saturday morning I did some cleanup around the yard and the house.

Memorial Day Weekend 2006 »

It wound up being a far more active weekend that I had hoped for. I took Friday off and got most of my errands and household chores taken care of.
Friday night we went out to City Side for a while, and had a couple of drinks. The crowd was about average for a Friday night, [...]

Life in Abundance »

This entry is part 9 of 30 in the series Deep Thoughts

It is when we have loved greatly that our life is abundant. What does that mean. To me it implies passion. Not just passion for another person, that special someone, although that may be part of it. But it also means a great love for life and all the people that are part of our life…a passion for life if you will.

A Well Told Tale »

Some time back I wrote about how proud I was of one of my best friends, Paul Shepherd. Paul is a writer, and like most writers had worked for a long time on a book. His book, More Like Not Running Away, was selected for the Mary McCarthy prize which included having the book published.
